Objectives of the Course

It is aimed the students to learn the basic principles of bone mineral densitometry and ultrasonography equipment as well as patient preperation and positioning during the examination; performing the bone mineral density measurement with DXA equipment and the indications of various ultrasonography examinations with differentiating ability of the ultrasonography and Doppler artefacts.

Course Contents

1. Students knows what is the osteoporosis term and what are the indications for measurement of bone mineral densitometry (BMD).2. Should perform bone mineral density measurements using dual X-ray absorptiometry equipment (DXA). 3. Students knows the basic principles of ultrasonography equipment and ultrasound physics and should understand why and when the ultrasound is performed in medicine.4. Students knows the artefacts in sonography and Doppler procedure.

1 Introduction to Radiology, basic imaging methods, Patient preparation for radiological examination
2 Definition of osteoporosis and indications for bone mineral density.
3 Risk factors in osteoporosis and symptoms of osteoporosis.
4 Types and working principles of CMD devices. Gama Photon absorptiometry devices
5 X-ray absorptiometry devices, Dexa device structure. Quantitative CT and QuantitativeUltrasonography equipment
6 Use of Dexa device and accessories. Lumbar vertebra examination technique.
7 MIDTERM EXAM WEEK

9 Femur and forearm examination techniques and evaluation of Dexa results.
10 Definition of ultrasonography. Properties of sound waves.
11 Basic acoustic physics, piezoelectric crystal. Echo and sound propagation. Acoustic impedance
12 Interface interaction and image quality, Image traps and ultrasonography artifacts
13 Types of ultrasound. B mode, M mod. Power Doppler and Color Doppler ultrasonography
14 Doppler artifacts.
