Objectives of the Course

Fundamentals of organic chemistry are outlined. The reactions of organic compounds, their identification, their presence in nature and in living matter are given along with their biochemical behaviour.

4 The student discusses the functions of enzymes, vi,tamins, lipids, hydrocarbons and proteins.
5 The student can assess the organic reactions in the foods
6 The student have the knowledge on important aspects of pharmacological products.

Course Contents

The atomic properties,electron affinity, ionization energy, electron configurations of atoms, Lewis theory, hybridization, molecular bonding theories, hydrogen bonds, alkanes, alkenes, alkines, aromatic compounds, functional group bearing molecules such as alcohols, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, ketones, amines etc., their preparations, reactions. Naturally occurring organic molecules, lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, natural macromolecules, nuclec acid bases, nucleic acids, DNA, RNA, bioinorganic compounds, hem, hemoglobine, chlorophile, enzymes, vitamins and their function in biological processes.

2 Alkanes, alkenes, alkines, properties, preparations and reactions
3 Aromatic Compounds, electrophilic substitution
4 Substitution in aliphatic organic chemistry, SN1 and SN2 substitution, mechanisms; Alcohols, phenolic compounds
5 Polyalcohols, preparations, their presence in nature, reactions; The carbonyl function in organics, Aldehydes,
6 Ketons, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, preparations and reactions, their presence in nature

9 Amines, The sulfur bearing organics
