Objectives of the Course

Objectives of this course are to teach students about the contemporary roles and functions of oncology nurses, current developments and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention from cancer, cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment modalities, and train students about the oncology nursing care based on evidence-based recommendations, and management of symptoms and signs associated with cancer and treatments, and rehabilitation of cancer patients.

1 Discuss the responsibilities and roles of oncology nurses
2 Define cancer and carcinogenesis and explain cancer risk factors
3 Basic information on primary and secondary prevention principles in cancer, diagnostic methods in cancer and current cancer treatment options
4 Describe the needs of cancer patients and their families in diagnosis and treatment, plan care interventions to address the problems and side effects encountered during cancer treatment, assess the effectiveness of care and nursing interventions
5 Develop patient and family education plan in line with the needs of the cancer patient and apply the patient education plan.
6 List palliative care and end-of-life care principles in cancer.

Course Contents

This course covers the basic concepts of cancer prevention, early detection and screenings for cancer, cancer treatments, nursing roles and responsibilities in cancer treatments, management of fatigue in cancer patients, management and care interventions of oncological concerns and toxicities associated with cancer therapy.
