Objectives of the Course

Adopt Atatürk’s Reforms that underlie Turkish Republic which was established after War of Independence accomplished successfully by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, apprehend statesmanship, reformist personality and leadership, non-racist nationalism mentality, efforts to keep international peace of Atatürk besides his soldier personality. In addition, giving information about political, social, economic matters of recent period history of Turkey, raise conscious individuals devoted to Atatürk’s principles, aware of internal and external threats, respectful to human rights, democratic and secular, adopted scientific understanding, fully realized the needs of contemporary world.

1 Compare aware of the fact that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s reforms is a result of Atatürk’s thought on having Turkish society to catch up with contemporary nations.

Course Contents

After the War of Independence, reforms which took place in the fields of law, education, economy, social and cultural structure to have the Turkish society to catch up with contemporary nations, transition to a multi-party system, political developments which took place during and after military intervention periods.

1 Political reforms, proclamation of the Republic and abolition of Caliphate
2 1924 Constitution, first political parties, establishment of Terakkiperver Cumhuriyet Fırkası ( Progressive Republic Parti), Şeyh Sait Riot, Takrir-i Sükûn Yasası ( law on the maintenance of order), assassination attempt for Atatürk
3 Reforms in Law, Education and Culture in order to regulate the social life; Tevhid-i Tedrisat Kanunu ( the law on the unification of education),acceptance of Latin alphabet, national schools
4 Establishment of Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası ( Free Republic Party) and dissolution of the party, Menemen Olayı ( Menemen Phenomenon)
5 Turkey after Atatürk; Presidency of İsmet İnönü, Second World War and Turkey, Establishment of Demokrta Parti ( Democrtatic Party), transition to multi-party system.
6 Power years of Democrtaic Party, political developments between 1950-1960, entering NATO
7 27.May.1960 Millitary Intervention, political developments between 1960-1970 in Turkey, 1961 Constitution, Power of Adalet Parti ( Justice Parti)
